Stepping Stone

Filed under: carmen, projects — Jana @ 7:22 am

I wanted to start a tradition with our family and make a stepping stone around our kid(s) birthday’s, that they could put in our garden (when I finally get around to planting a garden). Since Carmen just turned one it was time to start it. This was kind of a hard project though because turns out, first of all- concrete is a tough substance to work with, and second- Getting impressions of a toddler’s hand and foot is not as easy in actuality… as it is in theory. The heck you say, well… it isn’t.

After a few attempts of Carmen grabbing a big handful of cement, we finally got a decent imprint and it turned out ok.

Although I am sorry to you girls with whom I gave these to as gifts… Yeah Good Luck. Hopefully you will be more gifted than me with the medium of concrete sculpting.

  1. You are going to make one for every year? That is way awesome! Could you imagine if our family had a stepping stone every year for all eight children? The garden would be more of a shrine to handprints and footprints. That is a really great idea. I like the shells around the outside!

  2. That is a really cute tradition.

We made these for my parents a few years ago and after helping everyone else make theirs, I never made one myself! Maybe someday.

  3. What a cute idea! I love it, how do you do it? I look forward to see your garden as years go by.

  4. That is so sweet! I want to know how you did it too. Do you care if I copy?

  5. It’s way cute. Cement is really hard to work with. Mindy actually does hand and foot impressions as a business. I know that she uses clay, but maybe she could give you a few pointers!
