Crochet

Filed under: crochet, knitting, projects — Jana @ 2:51 pm

My sister-in-law Bethany taught me how to crochet at the family reunion. So I thought I would try it out for a while. Here are my finished creations.

I crocheted the edges of this receiving blanket (which I did actually sew myself… uhthankyou). I said that because I am not very good at sewing, in case you didn’t know.

And I also made some burp cloths out of cloth diapers. I just sewed some fabric down the middle and crocheted the edges.

I had intended on these being gifts but I’m not confident enough in my crochet skills to actually give these to people… Let’s just hope I have a girl next, or I don’t know what I’ll do with all my crafting stuff. I have yet to find much I can do for a baby boy.

Crocheting is fun but I think I am still committed to knitting more. Crocheting takes way more concentration. Not to mention that I have not figured out how to control my tension. It always turns out a little too tight, which makes the piece pucker. I don’t know, I guess I will have to practice more…and find some cute patterns.

My only other beef with crochet is that it is way too easy to unravel.  When knitting on circular needles (which is what I do most often) My stuff never gets unraveled.  But since I started crocheting I have had two mishaps where my toddler got a hold of the string and proceeded to bring it to me without the actual project with it.  And both times I was really far away from my project and that meant about a day’s worth of work down the drain.

If anyone has experience with crochet and wants to give me tips, I welcome them.

  4. I just adore the lacey crochet edging on that receiving blanket. Too precious!!

I really have to dig out my own crochet hooks. A co-worker is expecting and I want to make a baby blanket.

  6. Jana-
You did AWESOME!! They look so good! Did you do a double layer on the burp cloth? It looks so good. I love the material that you used. Did you use the #10 thread or a larger thread? Way to go!!

  7. On the burp cloths, I just sewed one piece of fabric to it, the backs are all white.
I used a larger thread on the brown ones and a smaller thread on the red and white.
