Buckle your seat belts, this is going to be a doozie (meaning this is going to be long, so don’t even start reading unless you’ve got some time on your hands).

The day we left for Hawaii, we woke up to Carmen in a crib full of vomit. So I threw all her bedding into the wash and rushed off to the airport, praying that she didn’t throw up on the plane. Thankfully my prayers came true, and there was no more sick for the rest of the trip. Although the 6 hour flight was pretty long with a toddler, she did pretty well. We spent most of Saturday traveling, telling her we were going to Hawaii, to go to the beach. Every few minutes she would say “I wanna go beach”. So the minute we got there we headed to the closest beach to our friend’s house so lee could catch a sunset session.

Of course Carmen loved it and she was even adopted into a family that had little kids that were living there on the beach. I had to pull her away kicking and screaming. Tons of homeless people live on the beaches there, and the police only kick them out every 6 months or so. We didn’t go back to that beach.

We stayed with our friends Kat and Mikey. Kat was really the reason that Lee and I got married, because although he and I knew each other before that, She made it so we spent some time together alone. Which obviously made us fall in love. She and I worked together at the mall and we both closed at the same time. We didn’t have anything to do one night, and she knew this guy Mikey that she wanted to “Make out with”. Mikey just so happened to be Lee’s room mate. So we went over to their house, and the rest is history.
I think in their professional world they now would like to be called Michael and Katherine (especially since he is a doctor now), but they will always be Kat and Mikey to us.

The next day we went to this little private beach over near diamond head that we had to walk across calf deep water to get to. It was probably my favorite beach, because it was the least busy, and it was secluded away from any traffic noise or crowds. It was fun, except for that we forgot Carmen’s sunscreen, so we could only stay for about an hour.

We went and found these cool trees that have big vines that grow all over them and they are actually big enough that you can swing on them.

In Hawaii, it rains almost every day for a little while, which is weird because usually the sun is still shining and it’s hard to tell where the rain is coming from. But it results in awesome rainbows almost every day.

About the 3rd day we got there I got a pretty bad sunburn. It did crazy things to my skin, and for the rest of the week I would break into hives pretty much anytime I went into the sun. I still have the rash on my feet and arms, but it is starting to get better. I asked Dr. Mikey about it and he said it definitely looked like contact dermatitis. but since I was using all kinds of different lotions and products, and I was really sunburned, and covered in sand every day, who knows what it was from. It just sucked pretty bad to be itchy the entire time.

One of the days we went to a beach where you can see sea turtles, which was really cool.

It started raining pretty hard on us at the beach on the north shore so we decided to go look at the neighborhood my grandpa used to live in before he died. It was really cool to see the places I went as a kid, and to see the temple.

This is La’ie point that is near my grandpa’s old neighborhood.

We went to a million different beaches while we were there. Probably 2 a day. Here is my favorite beach again.

Here is Pali lookout. Obviously very windy (and cold). Hawaii2008 045

Lee’s favorite was sunset beach (below) because it had his favorite break for surfing. I also liked it because it was near the Motsumoto’s shave ice, and it had really pretty little shells to collect. Here is Carmen there sitting in her chair giving me a look that was “too cool for school”.

The restaurants we at at there were mostly all just mediocre, luckily we had Kat there to cook for us. One morning we went to Mac 24-7 , Which I just liked because name sounds a little dirty. They have these 14 inch pancakes, and they give you 3 of them… They were HUGE. I got the Elvis that had peanut butter and bacon on it. It was pretty good, but a little overwhelming to look at.

One thing I did eat there, that I loved, was their Portuguese sausage, rice, and eggs breakfasts. The sold them all over and I think I ate one every day. They also make them with spam, You know those poly’s love their spam. I did have the opportunity to taste it, just for the heck of it. Not great. It’s not so much the flavor, as the bizarre texture. And the fact that I know it comes out of a can. I couldn’t even get Carmen to eat it, and that is sayin’ something.

Hawaii was awesome. I am not a great picture taker so I didn’t get pictures of everything, but I got enough to remember our trip. Mostly just being there, and exploring the island with Lee was so great. It wasn’t a really relaxing honeymoon type vacation, but I am already starting to miss it. Plus I know how much Lee loves to surf with Mikey. It was really fun, and I am pretty sad they will be moving from Hawaii in a few months. I would love to go back.

  17. Carmen’s swimsuits are so cute. I especially love the one that can’t be seen very well in the “too cool for school” picture. I can’t wait to dress a girl (if it ever happens)! It sounds like a fun trip and makes me count down the days for my trip to the Virgin Islands. Halleluiah!
