the nest

Filed under: baby, me, quilting, sewing — Jana @ 11:12 am

When the baby comes, I will be kicking Carmen out of her crib/toddler bed and into a big bed… and the new baby will get Carmen’s old diggs.

I figured cherry bedding is not acceptable for a boy, and since  I don’t really go for traditional boy stuff, I decided to make him a crib set.

I found some really cute twin size bedding at Ikea and decided to chop it up and make it into crib size bedding for the baby.

Once again I wish I could take a decent picture because it is cuter in real life, but oh well…

I made a white with black striped bumper.

Two pillows with the black white and red animals on one side and the stripe on the other.  As soon as I got done with the first one Carmen grabbed it from me and ran up stairs.  Later that night I found her own pillow tossed on the ground and the new one sitting nicely in its place. I have a feeling that she is going to have a hard time distinguishing what is hers and what is the new baby’s.

And I made a quilt. I put some red patches of minky on there for softness and color pop.

My favorite thing about this fabric was the little red birds.

I am really proud of myself for whipping these out, since I get frustrated so easily when I sew… But my machine was working really well, and I only had to do minimal seam ripping, which makes me exceedingly happy.  Plus my energy level is probably about as high as it will get during pregnancy, so I am stoked to be pretty much done with baby stuff (Well, the necessary stuff anyway). I’m sure I will eventually make some fun knitty stuff too.

  1. That is really cute and the red birdies make it pop!

  2. So cute! You did a great job… I love the feeling of acomplishing something like that and liking it still when its all said and done! I love the red and black and white. How much longertill he arrives?

  3. Jana, you are totally awesome. I love that you put minky in there – I LOVE MINKY! Tristan has two blankets that he loves: one side minky, the other side satin. He used to have three, but lost one at the zoo. Always good to have a great backup.

Anyway, I totally wouldn’t pick this fabric or know what to do with it, but the way you put it together makes me want it so much. I may have to put in an order, if I ever have another baby… You would do it if I paid you really well and because we have been friends for such a long time…right?!!! Okay, believe it or not, I can sew and knit and crochet, I just have no time anymore working full-time, going to school part-time and being a mom!

  4. Okay, I reread what I posted and hopefully I didn’t sound like a brat about the fabric. Sometimes I find fabric that is busy and I don’t know what to do with it. It’s not that I don’t think it’s not cute or anything. But you have a way of breaking things up and making it go together so well. Doesn’t that sound less like I am a brat? :)

and Misty, No I didn’t think you were a brat, I really got lucky with this fabric… I really have no idea what I am doing. I mostly just have really creative friends I mooch ideas from.

  9. Super cute! I am still working on a crib skirt and some accesories for Jack’s crib using Ikea bedding. I bought it thinking it was crib sheets and it turned out to be a kids bed duvet cover. Rather than drive the 2 hours back up there to return it I figured I would get creative. Then I got pregnant and lazy, like super lazy, and so it is on hold until I get the 2nd trimester energy. Way to go! I know sewing is not nearly as fun for you as knitting but you did a phenomal, cute job!

  11. Totally CUTE!! I love it and the red squares totally make the quilt. It’s always so gratifying when you finish a project like that. You will smile everytime you walk in his room because of it. We are so excited for you.

  12. Rawr. My phone dumped your page all day while I tried to comment. I finally gave up and am on the comp.

I tried to say earlier that I can’t believe I saw this fabric three days ago untouched! I definitely think this qualifies as nesting!
